TRAVEL

I spent 3 years post-graduation pursuing my childhood dreams and travelling. I have lived in the ‘world’s most dangerous city’ in South Africa, roamed through southern African safaris, dived into culture (and the ocean) in South East Asia, city hopped in 10 European countries, ran off the plane to see the world’s tallest building in Dubai, climbed New Zealand’s notorious mountains, lived surf-side in cities called Surfer’s Paradise and Mermaid Waters, and slept under starry skies in the Australian outback. I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to have seen stunning corners of this world.

SUSTAINABILITY

During this time of travel, my care and concern for the environment and conservation multiplied tenfold. I continue to live as an advocate for the sea and forests and have launched a sustainability blog, Simply Wasting Less.

EDUCATION, WORK, & SPORTS

Before my travel extravaganza, I took studying very seriously. My love for learning took over and I turned a 4-year Communications Degree into a Double Major (Communications and Psychology) with the Business Management Option – all of which was still completed in the 4 years.

During university, I was also working at least two jobs and volunteering, not-to-mention, playing for the Canada East ringette team. I was busy! But, I thrived off living in the moment, late nights, and iced coffee.

As a result, I ended up with a Gold Medal in the 2012 World Ringette Championships, Dean’s list honour roll for all 4 years of university, and the Gold Medal for the highest GPA in all senior-level science courses.

My studies and travel experience have given me an excellent foundation to continue building my professional portfolio. I am excited about the opportunities on the horizon.

BOOKS

Naturally, I love a good field guide! At the moment, "Marine Life of Pacific Northwest" by Andy Lamb and Bernard Hanby has been helping me identify the species I see while diving!

My favourite book is the popular, “The Alchemist”, by Paulo Coelho. I have tried to live by the themes that prevail throughout the book. Daily, I focus on following my heart, thinking positively, and failing gracefully. Here are some of my favourite quotes:

“People are capable, at any time in their lives, of doing what they dream of.” – Paulo Coelho

“When I read about clashes around the world — political clashes, economic clashes, cultural clashes — I am reminded that it is within our power to build a bridge to be crossed. Even if my neighbour doesn’t understand my religion or my politics, he can understand my story. If he can understand my story, then he’s never too far from me. It is always within my power to build a bridge. There is always a chance for reconciliation, a chance that one day he and I will sit around a table together and put an end to our history of clashes. And on this day, he will tell me his story and I will tell him mine.” – Paulo Coelho
